Chandigarh: PGI patient electrocuted due to short circuit in ventilator (28-06-11)


A patient was electrocuted during treatment following a short circuit in the ventilator at premier Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGI) in Chandigarh late on Monday evening.

The incident took place in the presence of doctors, who were giving electric shocks to the patient, Kindhar Singh, in the emergency recovery room of one of the best government hospitals in north India.

Kindhar was admitted to the hospital about a month ago because of a liver disease. He had undergone a surgery a couple of days ago. However, his condition deteriorated on Monday evening after which the patient was shifted to the recovery room.

He was being given electric shocks when there was a short circuit in the machine and the patient got electrocuted.

The relatives of the deceased blamed the hospital authorities for negligence. But the police were still waiting for detailed investigations before deciding their course of action.

"The patient underwent a surgery here after which he was on ventilator. Today his condition became critical after which he was given the electric shocks. It was during that time that there was a spark in the machine and the patient passed away," victim's relative Sarabjeet Singh said on Monday.

Chandigarh ASP (central) Deshraj Singh said, "The patient was being given electric shock when there was a spark in the machine. He died on the spot. We are still waiting for detailed investigations to decide the course of action."
