Salman Khan to shoot with a real tiger (04-07-11)

The buzz surrounding Salman Khan and his upcoming film Sher Khan is that Sallu will eventually be shooting for the film with a real tiger.

Since the movie is set in a jungle and is an adventure drama, there are scenes in the flick which need Sallu to act with a real tiger. Producer Sohail Khan is planning to shoot a scene where Salman is seen with a tiger, of course to have better effects in the film.

Though there are technologies such as computer graphics and animatronics which can do the trick but some parts will require a real tiger. "For shots not too dangerously close, we will use a real tiger," Sohail said. He is doing his best to present a different Salman in this film. He surely wants a different Sallu from what the audience saw in Dabangg and Ready .

Chennai: Teenage boy shot, Jayalalithaa orders CB-CID probe (04-07-11)

Chennai:  The army has promised full cooperation into the death of a 13-year-old boy, who was killed  after a jawan allegedly opened fire as he tried to trespass into a defence area.

Though, the army maintians that it is not invloved in Dilshan's murder, it said on Monday that it will take stern action against anyone who is found guilty.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered a CB-CID probe into the incident and also demanded the army to hand over those behind the killing of 13-year-old Dilshan to the police immediately.

Post-mortem report indicates bullet entry and exit marks on Dhilshan's head and forensic experts believe he was shot from a 15 to 20 foot range.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the Island Grounds area that houses army residential quarters.

Dilshan was rushed to a nearby government hospital, but did not survive. Dilshan's family alleged that he had been shot in the head when he went to the area to pick some fruit.

His death led to anger and outrage on the streets.

Jayalalithaa had announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the boy's family on Sunday.

An army official on Sunday, however, had expressed doubts over the involvement of any army personnel in the firing, claiming there were no armed guard in the entire complex.

"It is not correct to say something till we find out the truth. High-ranking police officials are already looking into the issue. It is an unfortunate incident," Brigadier (Administration) Sashi Nair told reporters.

He said the entire complex did not have any armed guards and the security had been outsourced and even those personnel have only sticks to ward off trespassers.

Nair said while some children were walking on the pavement, one of them "probably" tried to pluck something.

"These children are said to have heard gun shots. They immediately ran away and brought their parents who saw the boy with a bullet injury on his head," he added.

Lokpal Bill: PM's opening remarks at the all-party meet (03-07-11)

New Delhi:  The making of the Lokpal Bill has seen a series of unsuccessful meetings between the government representatives and civil society members of the drafting panel. Today, the stage is set for a showdown between the government and the Opposition parties at the all-party meeting on the bill which has begun at the Prime Minister's residence.

Here are the opening remarks by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh:

I welcome all of you to this All Party meeting on the Lokpal bill.  I am grateful to you for having found the time to participate in this important meeting.

The enactment of a strong Lokpal bill has attracted a lot of attention during the past few months.  As you know, we constituted a joint drafting committee consisting of five Union Ministers and five nominees of Shri Anna Hazare including himself.  The committee had nine meetings.  While considerable progress was achieved in evolving a consensus on many issues, a few important issues remain on which there is a divergence in our views and those of the nominees of Shri Anna Hazare. The papers circulated to you bring out these issues   and my senior colleague  Shri Pranab Mukherjee will elaborate on them as we go along.

There is no doubt that corruption is a major issue today. It is not that we do not have legal and institutional arrangements in place to tackle corruption. In fact, we have a number of laws, like the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Central Vigilance Commission Act, the Right to Information Act etc. which empower citizens to have access to information and which provide for stringent action against delinquents.  However, there is a feeling that the institutional arrangements in place are not strong enough to ensure that the guilty, especially those occupying high positions, are brought to book swiftly and given deterrent punishment.

I must make it clear at the outset that we, in government, are committed to the enactment of a Lokpal Act, which provides for a strong, effective and quick institutional arrangement for tackling corruption in high places. We are also committed to bringing the bill before Parliament in the coming Monsoon Session.  However, it is important that such an institutional arrangement enjoys the support of as large a section of people as possible and that there is the widest possible consensus regarding the bill.   We have convened this meeting in this background. We are looking forward to a free and frank discussion on contentious issues so that your valuable views could be taken into account while presenting a suitable bill in Parliament.

I must also add that while a good law and a strong institution are necessary to tackle the problem of corruption, these alone would never suffice. Along with these, we need to focus on simplifying procedures, reducing discretion, eliminating arbitrariness and increasing transparency in the way government functions.  It has been our experience that whenever such institutional changes have been made, both the opportunity for and the incidence of corruption have been reduced dramatically.   We are   focused on this process and we propose to pursue this with vigour and speed.

Finally, we have to keep in mind that whatever arrangement we propose has to be for the larger good of our society and our country.  The institution of the Lokpal has to work in harmony with other institutions and laws and it has to function within the framework of the basic structure of our Constitution.  It has to add to and not detract from the legitimate role and authority of other institutions in our democratic structure.  The Constitution provides for an intricate system of checks and balances and the new institution of Lokpal has to find an appropriate place in that matrix.

I look forward to your views and suggestions on the Lokpal bill.

Bad weather halts Amarnath Yatra (03-07-11)

Srinagar: The Amarnath yatra was again halted Sunday due to landslides and bad weather along the route to the south Kashmir cave shrine. The Met office has predicted more rain and thundershowers in the region.
"Due to landslides at a few places on the trek from Baltal base camp to the cave, the movement of pilgrims from the base camp towards the cave has been halted. The decision to allow the yatris will be taken after the landslides are removed and after improvement in the weather," a senior official said via phone from Baltal.
The official said pilgrims going to the cave shrine through helicopter sorties are being allowed to reach the cave shrine.
"Helicopter sorties between the Baltal base camp and the cave shrine are operating normally."
"The maximum number of yatris who can use the helicopter service per day is around 800," the official said.
Reports from south Kashmir Pahalgam base camp also said the movement of pilgrims from the base camp towards the cave shrine had been halted because of bad weather.
"The decision would be reviewed as the weather starts improving," a senior police officer said in Pahalgam.
The weather office has forecast rain and thundershowers along both the mountain treks to the cave shrine during the next 12 hours.
So far, over 50,000 pilgrims have performed the pilgrimage which started here on June 29.
The heavy rush of unregistered yatris has adversely affected the smooth conduct of this year's pilgrimage.
"We are virtually handling three times the number we are supposed to because of the arrival of unregistered pilgrims to the Valley from outside," an official said.

Ilyas Kashmiri organised killing of Shahbaz Bhatti: Paul Bhatti (03-07-11)

The assassination of Pakistan's minority affairs minister Shahbaz Bhatti was organised by al-Qaeda-linked militant commander Ilyas Kashmiri and the perpetrators of the crime are currently in Dubai, his brother Paul Bhatti has said.
"The investigations into the murder of my brother Shabhaz are finally on the right track: it is the work carried out by the Taliban and Islamic fanatics. Now we are waiting for the capture of the perpetrators of the crime, who are in Dubai," Paul said.
An inquiry commission set up by interior minister Rehman Malik had concluded following investigations that the murder was organised by al-Qaeda’s 313 Brigade, also known as the "ghost army" and led by militant commander Ilyas Kashmiri, he told Agenzia Fides, a Catholic news agency.
According to the commission's report, the 313 Brigade commissioned a Taliban commander from Punjab province, Asmatullah Mawaia, to eliminate Shahbaz.
The plan was then executed by elements of the Tehrik-e-Islami extremist group along with a faction of the Ghazi Force, Paul said.
The interior minister had "announced an international arrest warrant" for the perpetrators, said Paul, currently Special Advisor to the prime minister for religious minorities.
Shahbaz was gunned down near his residence in the heart of Islamabad on March 2 as he was driving to work.
He was the second senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party to be assassinated for opposing the controversial blasphemy law.

Sehwag doubtful for 1st Test against England (1-07-11)

Chennai:
Dashing opener Virender Sehwag's availability will be the bone of contention when the national selectors meet on Saturday to select the Test squad for the cricket tour of England.
While Sachin Tendulkar (rested from the ongoing tour of the West Indies), Zaheer Khan and Gautam Gambhir (recovering from injuries) will be back to bolster the squad, there hasn't yet been any concrete information about the status of Sehwag's injured shoulder that underwent a surgery in May.
A source close to Sehwag said that the opener may just struggle to get fit in time for the first Test as "he is yet to get back the desired strength in his shoulders." The first Test starts from July 21 at the Lord's. India are scheduled to play four Tests and five ODIs during the tour of England.
"We have no information as of now on the status of Sehwag's injury. We will only get to know once we are in Chennai. We have heard that Gautam and Zaheer are fit," a selector preferring anonymity said on Friday.
There is speculation that selectors may just take a gamble by including Sehwag in the team and wait for him to get fit by the time the second Test starts in Nottingham from July 29.
Asked about the poor show by Murali Vijay and Abhinav Mukund in the three innings so far, the selector retorted, "These two (Vijay and Mukund) are the best available replacements for Viru and Gauti. We don't have too many options in opening. Only Parthiv can be another option."
Parthiv is a certainty as a second wicketkeeper.
If Sehwag fails to make it then Vijay, by sheer experience of having a longer stint in the team, may get another international lifeline.
While the other places in the batting order are almost sealed after Raina's back-to-back 50s, the extra middle-order batsman's slot may be a three-way battle between Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and senior-pro Yuvraj Singh.
While Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma have sealed their places after impressive show in the West Indies, the young Abhimanyu Mithun may have to battle it out with S Sreesanth for the fourth pacer's slot.

Malaysia Airlines bans babies from first class (29-06-11)

London:  Malaysia Airlines has banned babies from first-class cabins after wealthy passengers complained they were not able to sleep peacefully during their flights, a media report said.
The airline - which operates out of Kuala Lumpur - imposed the baby ban on the first-class cabins of its Boeing 747 jumbo jets, the Daily Mail reported.
Tengku Azmil, Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer and managing director, said he imposed the ban after the company received complaints from "well-to-do" passengers whose sleep had been disturbed by screaming children.
Travellers with babies will instead have to book seats in economy or business class cabins, which are equipped with bassinets.
Azmil said on Twitter the ban was imposed due to "many complaints from 1st class pax dat dey spend money on 1st class & can't sleep due to crying infants (sic)".
The ban will take effect on flights from Kuala Kumpur to London, Amsterdam and Sydney.
Airlines like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are also considering creating children-free flights

Govt to withdraw 25 paise coins from tomorrow (29-06-11)

Agency:PTI
The 25 paise coin, which has been fading out of the pocket change in the recent years because of low acceptability, will finally become history from tomorrow.
The coin, along with those with lower denominations, will be demonetised or cease to be legal tender.
Today was the last day to exchange such coins with banks or the Reserve Bank of India.
"Coins of denomination of 25 paise and below will cease to be legal tender from June 30, 2011. These will not be accepted for exchange at bank branches from July 1, 2011 onwards," the RBI has said recently.
In December 2010, the Government had decided to withdraw the coins of denomination of 25 paise and below from circulation from June 30.
Even before price inflation killed the 25 paise coin, RBI had been receiving complaints regarding non-acceptance of the coin by shops, business establishments, utility services and even public sector organisations and government departments.
The central bank, then, had to issue notice that the coin was in circulation and continue to be legal tender. Coins of 1, 2, 3 and 5 paise denominations have already demonetised.
After independence, during the period of transition (1947-1950), India retained the monetary system and the currency and coinage of the earlier period.
While Pakistan introduced a new series of coins in 1948 and notes in 1949, India brought out its distinctive coins on August 15, 1950.
The Frozen Series 1947-1950 represented the currency arrangements during the transition period up to the establishment of the Indian Republic. The Monetary System remained unchanged at One Rupee consisting of 192 pies.
The Anna Series was introduced on August 15, 1950 and represented the first coinage of Republic India. The King's Portrait was replaced by the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar, according to an RBI document.
In September 1955, the Indian Coinage Act was amended for the country to adopt a metric system for coinage. The rupee remained unchanged in value and nomenclature. It, however, was now divided into 100 'Paisa' instead of 16 Annas or 64 Pice. The 2.5 grams nickel 25 paise coin was born.
The latest 25 paise coin, weighing 2.83 grams, was ferritic stainless steel.
As per the RBI, over a period of time, cost benefit considerations led to the gradual discontinuance of 1, 2 and 3 paise coins in the 1970s.
Stainless steel coinage of 10, 25 and 50 paise, was introduced in 1988 and of one rupee in 1992. SA

Indian women world's most stressed: Survey (28-06-11)

Women around the world feel stressed and pressed for time, but women in emerging markets are more stressed than their sisters in developed nations -- and Indian women say they are the most stressed of all, according to a survey published on Tuesday.
But while women in emerging markets may be under more pressure, they are also far more hopeful, with most seeing more financial stability and better chances for education for their daughters, according to the survey of 21 developed and emerging nations by global information and analytics firm Nielsen.
An overwhelming 87% of Indian women said they felt stressed most of the time, and 82% had no time to relax.
Despite being stressed, though, Indian women were also the most likely to spend any extra cash they might happen to have on themselves over the next five years.
Nearly all, 96%, anticipated buying clothes, while 77% said they would splash out on health and beauty products and 44% on home electronics.
"Women across the globe are achieving higher levels of education, joining the workforce in greater numbers and contributing more to the household income," said Susan Whiting, vice chair at Nielsen, in a statement.
"Women tell Nielsen they feel empowered to reach their goals and get what they want, but at the same time, this level of empowerment results in added stress."
Mexican women came in second in terms of stress and lack of time, with 74%, followed by Russia with 69%, which the survey blamed partly on the intense pace of social change, with what took half a century to evolve in developed countries compressed into five for their emerging cousins.
The highest stress levels in developed countries were Spain with 66 percent and France with 65%. Some 53% of US women said they were stressed.
Women in general felt they had more opportunities than their mothers no matter where they were living.
But women in emerging markets believed their daughters will have more chances than they did, while those in developed nations said their girls will only have the same opportunites, not more.
In emerging markets, 80% of women surveyed believe their daughters will have greater financial stability and 83% believe they will have more educational opportunity.
Only 40% of women in developed nations saw their daughters having more financial stability, and only 54% forecast more educational chances.
"The difference in perceptions is ... reflective of the belief that women in developed countries have achieved a certain level of attainment and success," said Whiting.
"While women in emerging markets see tremendous growth in the opportunities for their daughters, a plateau of hope is evident in developed countries."
The most optimistic women were in Turkey, an overwhelming 92% of whom thought their daughters would have more opportunities than they did, followed by 89 percent of Nigerians and Malaysians.
Only half of US women thought the same.
No matter where they were, though, women were more keyed into social networking than men, talking 28% more and texting 14% more every month. They also visited more Internet community sites.
More than half of women in both developed and emerging nations said that computers, mobile phones and smart phones had changed their lives for the better.
"To connect with women, strategies should be social and relevant," said Whiting, noting that social networking meant women followed brands more than men.
"Women are much more likely to engage with media that seamlessly integrates into and improves their day-to-day lives."
The survey was conducted from February to April and covered nearly 6,500 women in Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Nigeria, China, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Japan, Australia and South Korea.
